Happy Birthday Maya Angelou

Happy Birthday Maya Angelou

Poet, writer and civil rights activist are just some of the words used to describe this talented and brave woman. Maya Angelou would have been 90 years old today.

Have a little listen to this poem today. ‘Still I Rise’ is taken from her third volume of poetry of 32 poems published in 1978.

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
‘Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like suns and like moons,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Don’t you take it so hard
‘Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines
Diggin’ in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your lies,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like life, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I’ve got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame
I rise
Up from a past that’s rooted in pain
I rise
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak miraculously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the hope and the dream of the slave.
And so, naturally.

There I go rising.

Hallmark Disney and Itty Bittys Review with Giveaway

These days life is so busy that we need to be as prepared as we possibly can. I have a calendar up on the wall to remind me of everything I need to do and where I need to be. I also like to keep a box of presents for either boys or girls so the children can always wrap up something really nice to take to their various parties. When they were smaller they could come home with invitations to three or four parties a month…each! It seems to be getting a bit easier now though. My motto is ‘be prepared!’ What really helps me with this is to have some cards at the ready for any occasion, cards that I have taken time over and carefully selected instead of having a mad dash at the last-minute. I’ve got a beautiful box made for me by one of my best friends on my shelf that I know that I can go to and be able to pick out a suitable card whenever I need it.

The selection of cards at Hallmark are so pretty and I have recently been looking at  the Disney range.

Belle Beauty and the Beast Birthday Card

Hallmark Disney and Itty Bittys Review with GiveawayHallmark have been pioneers of greetings cards for over 100 years and pride themselves on being the go to place for when you want to show someone how loved they are.

I love this 3D Belle card which has a fold out honeycomb dress. Really pretty and it adds a bit of an extra girly flamboyance to it.

The itty bitty collection is made up of a whole host of well known and adorable characters, from the Frozen favourites; Elsa, Anna, Olaf and Sven to Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean. The cute toys are so soft and snuggly that I bet you won’t want to give them away as presents. I remember when my youngest was smaller he loved rubbing clothes tags between his fingers as a soother and when I saw the little arms and in particular the antlers on Sven itty bitty I imagined him doing the same with these toys.

With most toys being quite expensive it was refreshing to see that itty bittys are well within the price I like to pay. At £6.00 each they are very reasonable and they are bound to put a smile on the face of whoever receives them.
