Is Yoga Right For Me?

I’ve started to think about some light exercise again and have dipped my toe in my local swimming pool which is nice enough but I seem to slink out towards the jacuzzi more often than not. Watching other people complete their lengths, gliding through the water like little otters doesn’t seem to help my ever expanding tummy…. shame!

So, I have now explored Yoga…well its a bodybalance class which appears to be, Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi, rolled into one class….it’s bliss!!

My first class was an eye opener… I walk in, dead on 11 to be greeted by everyone already stood, facing forward in an orderly fashion, mat in front, ready to go! I stood by the door, seemingly now knock-kneed and awkward. Awkward and over 40 is something I didn’t know could still happen, but there we go! I blushed and spluttered out that I was sorry and I was new…yes, I actually said ‘I’m new’. What was mortifying really funny was that I heard and I promise this is true, I heard someone say, ‘aaahhh bless’.

With that little gem of a start out of the way I engrossed myself in the class. The terms, stances and methods were new to me but the class felt safe and secure and actually, amazingly welcoming.

One day I hope to balance long enough for a photo!
One day I hope to balance long enough for a photo!

I have to be completely honest and say at my stage…and I’ve been to two classes at the time of writing this…that I’m not completely sure where the Tai Chi moves into the Yoga and then onto Pilates. What I am aware of though is how it makes me feel. It’s a strange feeling of stretched and supple, relaxed and energised. Truly the best feeling I’ve ever had after any sort of class I’ve ever been to. I’m not a gym bunny by any means so I haven’t got masses of experience to draw on but I do know myself and this fits with me.

I’d love to keep this up and I will draw on an expression that I love which is….

‘ the hardest thing about a class is turning up’

So I think that ‘Yes’ yoga, in this form is right for me. I was wondering what others have thought about their first experiences of classes similar to this, I’d love to hear…

  1. I used to attend a yoga class and loved it. It got cancelled though and there’s nothing else near by. I’m having to resort to Youtube videos at the moment.
Thanks so much for being our #newbieshowcase honey, it was great having you. xx

  2. It sounds lovely! I haven’t really tried yoga before but you are definitely right that the hardest part is turning up. I just don’t have time for classes! Changing jobs in Sep (teacher atm!) so hopefully may have more time then as does sound really good. #KCACOLS

  3. This made me smile because I know what it’s like walking into a yoga/pilates class late. Aaaahh bless. : ) I tripped over a dude’s mat and he stared me down, and then he kept staring.. #awkwardturtle. Anyway, I think Yoga/Pilates/Tai Chi mix would be amazing, it’s crazy the sort of classes they’re coming up with today. I always feel, as you’ve said, relaxed yet energised after a yoga class. I think it’s because the blood is flowing to areas that are usually very inactive. ; ) Thanks so much for linking up with #StayClassy!

    1. lol I love your comments:) In a way its great to be the new person again, it happens less frequently so it’s a good wake up call. Especially as I now encourage my kids to try different things and I see how they sometimes squirm having to go somewhere new.

  4. I have always wanted to try yoga, but sadly I have never gotten around to it. I might have to see of there are any near by and convince my friend to go with me lol. Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday.xx

    1. Will do:) I think that the whole yoga experience is worth a try, even if it’s just the once:) X

  5. Haha, i love an exercise class. Occasionally. I’m so uncoordinated and lazy though, I stop whenever the instructor isn’t looking!! *pokes belly* #KCACOLS

    1. lol, love it, and quite right too Sarah, I think everyone should try a bit of that, I know I will:) xx

  6. It’s great that you have been welcomed into the class! It’s funny everyone knows to show up early ready to start yoga at 11. I agree I think the hardest thing about exercise is starting it – whether it be at home or out of the house. Thanks so much for joining us at #bloggerclubuk

    1. I know! They are a truly dedicated bunch!:) I’m not sure if that’s quite me;) thanks for you comments Becky X

  7. I have yet to make it to a yoga class and in all honesty will probably end up trying it out on you tube. I have been to a piyo class and aside from being in agony for days afterwards I enjoyed it and have a real desire to make it a regular part of my weekly workouts (the classes are always full and i am always too late to book for both yoga and piyo these days, such a shame!) #kcacols

    1. Its the second time in 2 days I’ve heard about piya, i had the girls round last night (such a sore head today!) and they mentioned it aswell. I’m going to search it today! Love your post ‘cheap ways to exercise at home’ x

  8. I tried yoga a few years ago when I was trying to get pregnant. I managed about 6 weeks of yoga, which I really loved, then got pregnant and decided to stop (not sure why now?!). Would like to have another go at it but the hardest part is getting to the class. I like the suggestions above about using Youtube etc. Hope you keep motivated to keep going! #KCACOLS

    1. thanks for your comments Julie. I’ve booked myself on the class for tomorrow and it was full last week. Its already playing around my mind so I hope I have the ‘get up and go’ needed to haul myself there:) x

  9. I’ve been to a yin yoga class once and really must get back into it. Luckily the gym down the road from me offer some great hollistic classes including yoga 🙂

    1. Oh that sounds good if the gym is close, I need everything to be made as easy as possible or I might make excuses for myself!:) thanks so much for commenting:) have a great weekend!

  10. I love yoga, it’s been awhile since I’ve been able to go to a class as I’ve had two major operations on my knees but I really do miss it. I agree with you it is the best feeling I’ve had after any sort of class I’ve been to. The first time I ever went to yoga I fell asleep during the relaxation part, it was rather embarrassing 🙂 Hope you continue to enjoy your classes 🙂

  11. I’ve never tried yoga but the idea of it (and pilates) really appeals to me. It seems like a more gentle, less full on type of exercise but I do worry that my old bones will be nowhere near supple enough to do even the most basic move. I positively creak when I walk! I hope it continues to go well for you, making that first step to join the class is the hardest hurdle so well done 🙂 #abrandnewday

    1. Oh I creak all over, especially the knees!:) its OK though because the instructor just says to pass or simplify anything you want….thank goodness!! X

  12. Oh I love yoga, never been to a class though. I do yoga at home, usually with a DVD or videos on YouTube. Lots of free yoga vids on YouTube, I like Yoga with Adriene.

  13. I’ve dipped in and out of yoga throughout the years but a couple of years ago I committed to a course and I felt wonderfulat the end. I love each class but the beauty is in the journey! #bloggerclubuk

    1. Hi, Yes, I guess it is:) its a great experience and for the moment it feels right:)

  14. The only experience I have with yoga is on DVD, name I’m clueless on I’m afraid. I tried to get in on pregnancy Pilates but they were full up! I now go to a fit mums class, going strong about 7 months! I’m a pro! I got that “I’m new” feeling when going in but they were welcoming and made me do appropriate activities for a mum that had a baby 8 weeks previous! As I said I’m a pro now! #abrandnewday
